is Food For The Hungry? Now in its 28th year, Food for the Hungry is an annual drive that collects food and revenue for the Knox County branches of The Salvation Army and Interchurch Social Services. These agencies in turn use the donations to help Knox County families with basic necessities throughout the year. 100% of all donations to Food For the Hungry stay in Knox County. . Monday, November 1 – Monday, November 30, 2009 Mount Vernon YMCA Preschool collects donations for Food For The Hungry During this time, YMCA preschoolers are collecting non-perishable food items to support Food For The Hungry. The winning class will receive a pizza party and be featured on the Food For The Hungry TV/Radio broadcast on 12/12 at Mount Vernon City Hall. You can help by dropping off items at the main YMCA by the customer Service Desk.

The Psi Iota Xi School Food Drive to benefit Food For The Hungry During this time, elementary students are encouraged to bring food and cash donations to school to support Food For The Hungry. The class in each school that contributes the highest average number of food items per student will be treated to a classroom pizza party. Each $1.00 donated = 4 food items. The Top 10 student donors will be featured at 11am on the Food For The Hungry TV/Radio broadcast on 12/12 at Mount Vernon City Hall. Monday, November 23 – Wednesday, December 9 (MVNU PRESS RELEASE) During this time, high school students are encouraged to bring food and cash donations to school to support Food For The Hungry. The school that donates the most food items per student earns the Stanley Can award and keeps it at their school for the next year. The Knox County Career Center is the reigning champion! The deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 9 at noon. Each $1.00 donated = 4 food items. The Stanley Can award-winning school will be featured on the Food For The Hungry TV/Radio broadcast on Dec. 12 at Mount Vernon City Hall. Monday, November 23 – Tuesday, December 8, 2009 During this time, the MVNU Esther Jetter Preschool children will be collecting non-perishable food items to support Food For The Hungry. The three-, four- and five-year-olds are working together to fill a grocery cart in their classroom (donated by Neff's Cardinal Market). During their annual Christmas program on Tuesday, Dec. 8, a special guest from Interchurch will be on hand to accept the cart of food. The public is welcome to attend the program; suggested admission fee is one can of food, which will go to Food For The Hungry.

Vernon (Schnormeier Gallery @ MVNU Buchwald Center) (PRESS RELEASE) Psi Iota Xi’s Gallery of Holiday Treasures to benefit Food for the Hungry will be open for the first time during the Christmas parade on Saturday, November 28. The location is the MVNU Buchwald Center at 211 South Main Street in Mount Vernon with viewing hours 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Gallery will also be open for Sunday’s Christmas Walk 1 to 4 p.m. Gallery hours Monday, November 30 through Friday, December 4 are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Silent bids may be placed for decorated trees, wreaths, stockings, bears and ornaments. All items are donated and auction proceeds will be benefit the Food For The Hungry drive. Seven trees will be up for bid, including a live boxwood tree donated by Town and Country Garden club. The tree was created with boxwood from a local garden. Gallery visitors will also be able to place bids on a stuffed bear adorned in mink, a Vera Bradley Christmas stocking, a wreath donated by the OSU alumni club, and hand-painted ornaments donated by the Knox County Art Guild depicting winter scenes of Knox County. Poinsettias are available in red or marble with red, green, or gold foil. 4 inch posts are $5.00, 6 inch pots are $10.00 and 8 inch pots are $15.00. All proceeds from the sale will be split between the two agencies and will stay in the Fredericktown area. Pre-orders may be placed by calling the Village Office at 740-694-9010 or by picking up forms anytime at Fredericktown Chevrolet, Grubbs Tru Value Hardware, Farmer’s Citizen Bank, or the First-Knox National Bank. Pick up is available anytime at Grubbs Tru Value hardware or on the day of the Fredericktown Christmas Walk (12/6) between noon-5 p.m. in the former coffee shop at the corner of College and Main Street.
Sunday, December 6 Donations are being sought of antiques, treasures of all kinds, services, gift certificates, jams, jellies, baked goods, heirloom recipes, and gift baskets. Items may be dropped off at the Fredericktown Village Office or you may contact Joy Draper at 694-2049 or Danny Lamb at 694-4041. Bring your family to Fredericktown to support Fredericktown Interchurch Social Services and the Salvation Army. Activities include: horse-drawn wagons, beautiful ice sculptures and carving demonstrations, hot food and WNZR's Christmas Karaoke at the Masonic Lodge, open fire chili with the Fire Department,Sophia’s Petting Zoo, Christmas crafts at the Baptist church, the local vendor’s craft bazaar at the Presbyterian Church and visits with Santa at First Knox National Bank. The Annual Food for the Hungry Charity Auction, starting at 1 p.m., will offer the addition of heirloom recipe baked goods this year along with collectibles and items donated by area businesses. To donate items, please call the Village Office at 694-9010. Fredericktown Christmas Walk The 8th Annual Fredericktown Christmas Walk commemorative ornament has been released and is available for purchase. The design this year depicts the old village fire house once located on the Village Square. These unique solid pewter ornaments are paid for in part by a donation from the Fredericktown Village Council and are for sale at local Fredericktown businesses throughout the Christmas season for a donation of $15. These local businesses are, Grubb's Feed Express, Huff’s Fine Jewelers, A Taste of Country and the Fredericktown Community Library. Ornaments will be for sale during the Christmas Walk from noon to 5 p.m. in the old store front on the corner of College and Main. The first 25 ornaments have been stamped and numbered and are sold each year for $25 each. The first three of this set will be auctioned off during the Food For The Hungry Charity Auction at the Senior Citizen's Building starting at 1 p.m. Families who have obtained particular numbered ornaments from previous years will be given the opportunity to reserve the same ornament number this year. A few limited addition numbers are still available. If interested, please contact the Village office at 694-9010. Fredericktown Christmas Walk Toy Shop The Fredericktown Christmas Walk is in need of gently used toy donations for its annual Santa’s Toy Shop sale held during the Walk, December 6th. Toys, games, books, video games, sports equipment and the like will be accepted (due to health regulations, we are unable to accept stuffed animals). Toys do not need to be perfect, but should be in good working condition. All proceeds generated from the toy sale will be donated to Food For The Hungry. Toys may be dropped off in the marked boxes at Fredericktown Chevrolet, the Fredericktown Primary School foyer, or at the office of NewLife Community Church located at 16 E. College Street. Toys will be collected, cleaned and packaged for sale by members of the outreach team of NewLife Community Church again this year.The Toy Shop will be open during the Christmas Walk on Sunday, December 6th from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the storefront on the corner of Main and First Streets.
