The Good family, mother, father and three teenagers, enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. Both parents worked until an unexpected crisis. Mother was diagnosed with a chronic, debilitating disease. As the disease progressed and she became weaker, she was unable to continue working. The household income dropped by half. They cutback as much as they could and depleted their savings, but rising costs made it impossible to meet expenses for the basics – food and shelter. Not knowing where to turn, they contacted the local Interchurch office. ISS was able to provide pantry service and financial aid to avoid a utility disconnect. They were also given support in applying for other programs (food stamps, HEAP) that can provide ongoing assistance. Mother states that this has been a humbling experience for them, but they find something to be thankful for each and every day.
Mrs. P volunteers once a week in her local Interchurch office. She lives on a modest social security income and depends on the rental income from a small home that she rents out. Unfortunately, her tenants have fallen on hard times and have not paid their rent for several months. Mrs. P has been forced to begin eviction proceedings. In the meantime, Interchurch offers her pantry service to stretch her social security income to cover living expenses.
