The S. couple came into the Salvation Army office for food assistance on a dreary rainy day. They were given a food box. They shared that they were waiting for their first check from the husband’s new job. This first check was to go for the apartment that they were about to rent. Later that evening the local police department called. They had seen a couple sleeping on the benches on the square. It was raining. They were drenched. They were provided lodging until the paycheck came in a few days. They now are in an apartment and hopefully doing better.
Over the years the salvation Army has been working with the J. family (mom, dad, and two children). The father is on disability, as are the children. Over the years they have struggled maintaining rent payments primarily because their income would cover rent and utilities during the summer months but when winter came the heating bill was too much for them to handle in addition to rent. They received counseling on their budget, were provided food on a regular basis so they could try to catch up and inch a little ahead with their finances. With help they have since secured permanent housing
Mrs. B. and her three children came seeking assistance with their electric bill, which was due to be shut off that day. Her husband had recently died due to illness and because of funeral arrangements and hospital bills the family simply was behind in many of their obligations. Normally The Salvation Army does not provide full payment of a bill but there are some cases that just deserve that kind of help. The promise from the Salvation Army to assist her and her children was enough to keep the electricity on. The electric company was very kind to keep it on as a result of a simple phone call from their office. |
