HEADLINE: Food for Fines and Battle of the Coffee Shops kicking off for Food For The Hungry
MOUNT VERNON— Food For The Hungry events are underway as the 2021 campaign officially launched on Nov. 5. Food For Fines is taking collections now through Saturday, Dec. 11. This year marks the 33rd year for Food For Fines. During these dates, The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, including its branch libraries in Fredericktown, Danville and Gambier will be taking collections benefiting FFTH in which library fines may be paid with canned or boxed non-perishable food items equal to the value of the fine. For the purposes of this event, one food item is considered to be equal to $1. Free-will donations of food or money will also be gratefully accepted.
Items that are near their expiration dates or are in a damaged or compromised container will not be accepted. All donations will be given to the FFTH Drive. All donations will stay in the community in which it was given. The libraries will not accept food in payment for lost or damaged items. In addition to food items, the library will accept Humane Society approved brands of pet food.
Battle of the Coffee Shops is kicked off Saturday, Nov. 6, and continues through Saturday, Nov. 20. Until Nov. 20, the community can go into their favorite coffee shop and donate non-perishable food items or give a financial donation to FFTH. Each person who donates $1 or more can put their name into a drawing for a $25 gift card to that coffee shop. Each canned good is considered to be equal to $1 in this scenario. Customers can enter the drawing once per day. At the end of the time period, the coffee shop with the most donations will win the “Food For The Hungry Coffee Shop of the Year” trophy and bragging rights for the year.
In 2020, Knox County Coffee Shops collected a total of $3,452.08 and 168 food items! The Brickhouse Grind from Fredericktown received the trophy for collecting the most donations - $2,732.18 and 113 food items!
